Help on the way for patients in Rivers State

Cancer patients will no longer have to travel to outside Rivers State to get treatment.

This is following the rehabilitation of the New Care and the Nephrology Department of University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital UPTH.

Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of UPTH Princewill Stanley said six dialysis machines have been installed at the hospital.

” in the next two months,the Nuclear Medicine Department will come with full functioning. And we will also maximize the sufferings of our people who may have need to leave this place to places like Lagos ,Ibadan. There are many other innovations coming into the hospital. The Nephrology Unit is coming back with 6 different machines. And the installation is going on. By the end of this month, we are ready to go”

According to the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at UPTH, over 700 out patients visit the hospital every week are clear increase when compared with the figures of last year.

Professor Stanley also revealed a 75% increase of inpatient at UPTH from the 40% that it used to be. He believes that the high figures are indication of the level of acceptance and confidence the people have in the hospital.

” the hospital is expanding and our patients load on daily basis have gone much higher than what it used to be. For instance, we see 700 to 800 patients on a weekly basis as our out patients and in patients capacity, the bed occupancy has gone almost 75%, that simply means our acceptance rate has increased, and our competence level too has equally increased” he stated.

Still on health, the Rivers State Ministry of Health is investigating suspected cases of Meningitis outbreak in the state. An official of the ministry who refused to be named said that the Emergency Operation Centre has already been activated and it is on response mode.

As you may know, a Facebook post by a Child Management Specialist based in Port Harcourt raised an alarm of a possible outbreak of Meningitis.
