In few hours, the Group D AFCON qualifiers will be concluded with the last round of matches. The only team that has qualified from this group, the Super Eagles of Nigeria will host the Amavubi of Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium while the Mediterranean Knights of Libya will take on the Cheetahs of Benin Republic.
Only one team from the other three teams can join the Super Eagles in booking their tickets for the 2025 AFCON. Which team can qualify?
Benin Republic is the second placed team with seven points, unfortunately, they will be playing in a hostile environment against Libya. They will qualify if they can secure a draw. They had their destiny in their hands against the lack-luster Super Eagles, but failed to convert their chances. If they had won that game, they would have qualified and therefore make today’s match a mere formality.
Their opponents, Libya gave themselves a lifeline when they went to Kigali and defeated Rwanda by a lone goal. They are currently last on the table with only four points, but will have the same seven points as Benin Republic if they can win today’s game. Their biggest challenge will be their -4 goals difference, which came about because of the three goals and three points awarded to the Super Eagles due to their hostile treatment of the Super Eagles on match day four. They will have to defeat Benin Republic with four goals margin or more to qualify.
Rwanda needs to defeat the Super Eagles to qualify. With five points and playing against a team that has already qualified, the Amavubis are fancying their chances of shocking the Super Eagles and hoping that Libya will defeat Benin Republic.
May the best side join the Super Eagles in the flight to Morocco 2025.
