Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti has approved a wage award of ₦45,000 for Abia workers, to be paid in monthly installments of ₦15,000 per month for over a course of three months.
The payment of the wage award is expected to commence this July.

Prince Kanu emphasized that the wage award is part of efforts of the state government to cushion the effects of the prevailing economic hardship on the people.
“Because of the Governor’s commitment to workers welfare, the Governor accepted to pay Abia workers a wage award of 45 thousand naira in total but at 15 thousand per month over a course of three months.
“Fifteen thousand per month times three, that’s forty five thousand, as a way of making our workers happy”.
He noted that the Organized Labour has called off its planned strike following a meeting with Governor Otti, wherein the Governor assured Labour Leaders that the state did not receive any wage award from the Federal Governments.
Prince Kanu while restating the commitment of Otti’s administration to the welfare of Abia workers, said that government would soon commence payment of annual leave allowance to civil servants who observe their annual leave.
“The issue of leave allowance, as you might have heard in the past, the Governor has agreed that once any Abia worker is due for leave, he or she would be paid his or her leave allowance.
“That was not the practice in the past, what we inherited was accumulated leave allowances but all that would be a thing of the past now given the Governor’s commitment which he made even before this meeting with the Organized Labour”, Prince Kanu stated.
He announced the near completion of the “Light Up Abia” project in major cities, which will now extend to all LGAs and added that key roads and streets, including Asa Road to Bata, Osisioma to MCC, Park Road, and Georges Street in Aba, and Naval College Owerinta, Bende Road, will benefit from the initiative.
Prince Kanu noted that despite the rainy season, various road projects have continued unabated with contractors working assiduously to deliver on all road projects.

“Following various tests carried out and the samples collected across these 8 LGAs, there were no reported cases of death, even a confirmed case of Cholera.
“There were some reported cases, about 12 reported cases of Diphtheria across the state in particularly in just two LGAs of Osisioma and Umuahia South. Unfortunately, there were three deaths resulting from those suspected cases but the test did not confirm that there were further cases of Diphtheria”, he said.
