The People’s Elephant defeated Bendel Insurance of Benin 3-2 in one of the week 5 matches of the Nigerian Premier Football League at the Enyimba International Stadium with the Governor of Abia State Dr. Alex Otti present alongside other government officials.
It took only two minutes for the visitors to take the lead. But Abiodun Joseph restored parity in the 18th minute as the first half ended 1-1.
The governor had to visit the players during the break as he stated on his X handle: “During halftime, I joined the team in the dressing room to offer words of encouragement.”
The visitors took the lead again in the second half but six minutes after the hour mark, Kalu Nweke converted from the spot to restore parity. Three minutes later, Chidera Michael netted the winner to give Enyimba all three points and maintain their lead on the table.
After the game, the governor expressed joy with the team, “Our boys responded with heart and determination, giving a remarkable account of themselves and ultimately emerging victorious,” the governor tweeted, “I extend my heartfelt appreciation to our teeming fans who turned out in large numbers to support our team. Your energy electrified the stadium in a good way. With your unwavering support, Enyimba truly lived up to its name as the People’s Elephant.”
With this victory, The People’s Elephant are top of the league table with 11 points.
In other matches, El Kanemi Warriors defeated Warri Wolves by a lone goal while Niger Tornadoes spanked Ikorodu City 4-2.
