Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to enhancing security across the state.
Governor Otti stated this, Thursday, at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia while declaring open the Renewed Hope Agenda: Citizens Town Hall Engagement on Strengthening Community Policing in Nigeria.
The Governor emphasized that the event Themed, “Community Policing: Building a Safer Nigeria Together,” underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in ensuring a safer society.
He noted that security remains a top priority for his administration hence the establishment of the Joint Security Taskforce, codenamed “Operation Crush”, as a key initiative aimed at combating insecurity and criminal activities throughout Abia State.
Government Otti highlighted the importance of security, and emphasized that without a secure environment, all efforts towards infrastructure development and the welfare of citizens would be in vain.
He said; “Our focus on security revolves around the understanding that everything else we plan to do in terms of infrastructure development and welfare of the citizenry will amount to noting if our people were constantly at the mercy of criminals.
“On assumption of office in May last year, I announced that security of lives and property shall be the number one priority of the state government as stipulated in the Constitution.
“Right from the Inauguration podium,I made it clear that we were prepared to give everything to keep our people safe from criminals and those who trade and threaten the security and peace of our land. Those were not just empty words.
“We made good our promise a few weeks later by setting up a joint task force codenamed “Operation Crush”, and gave them a very simple mandate to make Abia a safe place for law abiding citizens and a very uncomfortable territory for criminals”.
The Governor noted that the town hall meeting offers a valuable opportunity for a robost engagement between citizens and security operatives aimed at fostering a greater understanding of their roles in assisting to prevent crime as well as maintaining peace.
He called for the cooperation of all Abians in securing the state, maintaining that security is the responsibility of all citizens.
In her remarks, the Minister of State for Police Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, stated that the meeting aims to transform the Nigerian Police Force into a world-class institution suited for the 21st century.
She added that the goal is to create a Police Force that is responsive, intelligence-driven, community- oriented, and technologically advanced, while also excelling in maintaining public safety, upholding the rule of law, and fostering trust through transparent and accountable practices.
The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr Nkeiruka Onyejiocha in a goodwill message, described the town hall meeting as timely and essential for Abians and commended Governor Otti for prioritizing security and ensuring that all parts of the state are protected.
The event also featured a panel interactive session, and the presentation of a security award to Governor Otti in recognition of his efforts in strengthening security in Abia State.
