Abia State Government (ABSG) has reaffirmed its commitment to paying the 70,000 Naira National Minimum Wage to the state workforce this October.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu stated this while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu noted that payment of the minimum wage is in line with the Governor’s commitment to the welfare of Abia workers.
He said; “Bearing any unforeseen circumstances the state government will commence the payment of the new minimum wage this month of October.
“The State Government is committed to paying that minimum wage because of its disposition towards the welfare of our workers.
“There is now hope that within the next couple of days everything being equal, payment of minimum wage will commence”.
Prince Okey Kanu disclosed that the state government has earmarked 9 new road projects for reconstruction across the 3 senatorial zones of the state.
The roads according to the Commissioner are; 5.5 kilometres Onuimo – Abia Tower of Peace Umuahia, 7.15 kilometres
Onuinyang – (Bende) Okporoenyi – Oboro – Ikwuano road section one,
Onuinyang- kilometres Okporoenyi – Oboro – Ikwuano (Ikwuano) section two, 11.5 Ntigha – Nbawsi – Umuala road (Isialangwa North) , 11.1 kilometres Obehe – Umudiabia – Owaza road (Ukwa West) 11.27 kilometres.
Others are; the Mbala – Umuaku- Ngodo road in Umunneochi, 2.21 kilometres Umuogo – Nsukwe -Ubakala Ring road Umuahia South , 12.6 kilometres Ohanze – Ntighauzo – Obete – Akirika Oburu (Obingwa and Ukwa East), 6.9km
Umuopara Ring road , Umuahia South.
He added that two more roads have been completed in terms of maintenance making it a total of 127 roads fully maintained by the present administration adding that dualization work has started in Owerrinta -Umuekea road.
The Commissioner equally noted that in recognition of the giant strides recorded by ASEPA in keeping the major cities clean, the UN habitat has invited ASEPA and the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) to a conference holding in Egypt to tell the Abia success story in that regards.
“To give further vent to the appreciable achievements recorded by ASEPA , Un-Habitat has invited Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) and ASEPA to a conference in Egypt . They want them to come and tell the Abia story.
“Government is happy that people outside the country are appreciative of what the Governor Alex Otti is doing in the state.” Prince Kanu maintained.
He noted that in line with the state of emergency declared on refuse disposal by Governor Alex Otti on assumption of Office, ASEPA has been up and doing in keeping Aba, Umuahia and Ohafia clean and healthy while Lokpanta, Uzuakoli and Arochukwu cattle markets are not left out of the “Clean Up Abia Initiative” which was recently launched.
Contributing, the General Manager, ASEPA, Mazi Ogbonnia Okereke said the state government has performed well in waste management and general cleanliness in Abia State in the last 17 months of the administration.
“Aba has been identified today as a model of movement from a dirty city to something better . We are being asked to come and tell our stories first hand at a United Nations’ forum . You can imagine the kind of credit it will give Abia State” Mazi Ogbonnia Okereke.
The Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Comrade Sunny Onwuma, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma were present at the briefing.
