Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved the payment of outstanding fees for Abia students studying in an Indian University who were abandoned by the previous administration.
This decision was announced by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing following this week’s Executive Council Meeting chaired by the Governor.
Prince Kanu who emphasized the Governor’s commitment to the education sector, noted that the State Executive Council addressed the issue of the abandoned students with a view them successfully complete their studies.
“Following His Excellency ‘s interest and high premium he places on education sector, quite a lot is happening in that sector.
“Recently, there is this case of some Abia students who have been abandoned in India by the previous administration.
“His Excellency graciously approved that their fees be paid to enable them continue their education in the university in India”, he stated.
Prince Kanu further disclosed that the Governor also approved the disbursement of bursaries to Abia students in various law schools across the country.
“Recall that once, we mentioned this to you that His Excellency has approved that those payments be made. It has actually been made now,” Kanu confirmed.
The Commissioner revealed that through the Governor’s untiring efforts, 19 programs at Abia State University, Uturu, have secured accreditation.
“This speaks to all the efforts he has been making to ensure that our educational sector turns out to be about the best in the country,” Kanu noted.

He said that the Governor has approved the establishment of a Sports Academy by Abia-born UK-based footballer, Mr. Frank Onyeka.
The academy according to the Information boss, would be located between Umuahia and Aba for easy accessibility.
Prince Kanu said the Governor has directed the state Ministry of Lands and Housing to process the certificate of occupancy for the project within 48 hours.
He said the project is also receiving support from the Vice Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmed.
“He (Onyeka) visited His Excellency with his dear wife and the Vice Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election,Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmed was also on hand to support Mr. Onyeka on the trip.
“Dr. Ahmed has promised that he would lend every support to Mr. Onyeka to ensure the project succeeds.
“This is a way to encourage Mr. Onyeka, who is a son of Abia State, and to let others know that if they have such viable projects, the state government will always be willing and ready to support them,” Kanu added.
The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Uche Emeh Uche; the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma; and the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor cum Senior Special Assistant on Sports, Mr. Chinedu Ekeke were present during the briefing.
