Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has warned Abia people to desist from acts that would sabotage government’s efforts in road construction and use of public infrastructure.
Ikpeazu, who handed down the warning Wednesday, in Aba, while inspecting the Ojike Bypass, as part of his ongoing state wide inspection and commissioning of projects tagged “Kinetic Abia”, frowned at the indiscriminate dumping of refuse by residents, thereby blocking drainages already disilted by the state government.
“It is very disheartening to watch people dump things like used mattresses and pillows in the drainage, which eventually block the drainage system.
“Government is spending money to do these projects and the least we expect is for citizens to be civil in using the infrastructure provided by government,” he said.
While noting that the road is one of three new roads being done by his government to link the Cemetery market, the Governor restated his adminstration’s committment to delivering high quality infrastructural facilities for improved economic development of the state in addition to opening up economic zones.
This, he said would boost the level of commercial activities that take place in the state and improve the economy of the people of Abia and charged Local Government Chairmen to ensure that the drains are not blocked by people and to take steps to protect public facilities.
Governor Ikpeazu who inspected the construction of 9.3 km Osokwa-Aro -Umuejie-Omoba road, restated his desire to deliver roads that would outlive his tenure, while describing the road as a strategic economic gateway for the people of Osisioma, Isialangwa North and South local government councils.
According to him, the road will help in the evacuation of their farm products and also serve as an alternative route into Omoba community and charged the project contractor to get the road ready in two weeks and with standard drainages.
In his remark, the Commissioner for Works, Mr Bob Ogu assured that Ikpeazu’s administration would do all to deliver on its mandate and would ensure that quality roads constructed in the state would stand the test of time.
Earlier, the Transition Committee(TC) Chairman of Osisioma Ngwa local government council, Dr Ikechukwu Nwabekee described the road project as a welcome development adding that the state government’s agenda to advance rural development has gained great momentum with 15 roads being constructed in council slope, while his Isiala Ngwa counterpart, chief Nkem Onwubiko, added that the roads will alleviate the suffering of the people in the area.
The Governor inspected the work projects on Eziukwu, Milverton and Ojike roads and commissioned internal roads re-asphalting at the Aba Area Command of the Nigerian Police Force.
