FORMER TRANSITION COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN RESIGNS FROM PDP, CITES PARTY COLLAPSE IN ABIA STATE.
Comrade O’Brien Iroh, the former Chairman of the Translation Committee in OHAFIA Local Government Area of Abia State, has officially resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the collapse of party structures and leadership failure in the state.
In a letter dated August 15, 2025, and addressed to the Acting National Chairman of the PDP at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, Iroh described his decision as “painstaking,” attributing it to the alarming state of disarray within the PDP in Abia State and across the country.
Referring to a recent judgment by the Abia State High Court in Suit No. HB/5/2024, which nullified the last ward and LGA congresses of the party, Iroh expressed concern that the current party structure in the state is legally void, with no recognized leadership at the grassroots or state levels.
“I fear that anyone claiming to be a ward, LGA, or SWC executive member is merely an impostor,” he wrote.
He further lamented the absence of a functioning party secretariat in the state following the PDP’s exit from its former office on Finbarrs Road, Umuahia, after the 2023 general elections. According to him, the party in Abia now exists primarily on social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook, where, he said, it has devolved into a platform for toxic exchanges and internal strife.
“The party now only exists on social media. That’s why I’m also sharing this resignation letter via those platforms,” he stated.
Despite his departure, Iroh urged the national leadership of the PDP to intervene and rebuild the party in Abia State. He called for the reestablishment of a physical secretariat and the conduct of credible congresses to restore order and legitimacy.
He criticized what he described as the “social media politicking” of some PDP members who operate from outside the state, accusing them of engaging in political mudslinging, character assassination, and opportunism, rather than constructive opposition.
“Rather than rebuild the party after its abysmal performance in the 2023 elections, these self-proclaimed members are preoccupied with political cantankerousness and bootlicking,” Iroh added.
Ending his resignation letter on a personal note, he said he could no longer remain affiliated with a party that, in his view, has lost its values and direction.
“For the sake of my mental health, and to avoid being lumped with what the party has become in Abia, I hereby resign.”
Comrade O’Brien Iroh has been a member of the PDP for over two decades and played various roles at the grassroots level during his time with the party.
