Flooding To Hit 13 States Over Release Of Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam

Authorities at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) are on high alert following a potential flooding threat along the River Benue basin. The cause of concern arises from the impending release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, with officials anticipating the flooding to occur within the next few days.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sounded the alarm through a formal communication dated August 21. In a letter signed by Umar Salisu, the director of African Affairs, the Ministry emphasized the need for proactive actions to prevent and minimize potential damage. The letter referenced a communication from the High Commission of the Republic of Cameroon, revealing plans to open the floodgates of the Lagdo Dam on the Benue River.

The decision to release water was attributed to heightened rainfall in the dam’s catchment areas in Northern Cameroon. The Ministry’s communication urged NEMA to swiftly implement precautionary measures to mitigate any harm caused by the impending deluge, which could affect both Cameroon and Nigeria along the River Benue basin.

The letter highlighted that, in the event of water release, the authorities at the Lagdo Dam would take careful steps to release water in controlled, gradual quantities. This approach aims to minimize the potential impact of flooding.

Meanwhile, NEMA has proactively undertaken measures to address flood-related concerns in several South-Eastern Nigerian states, particularly in areas prone to riverine and lowland flooding. Mrs. Ngozi Echeazu, the South East coordinator of NEMA, stated that the agency has been closely monitoring water levels in major rivers in the region.

Efforts have included public awareness campaigns, encouraging timely planting and harvesting of crops to minimize flood-related losses. Additionally, plans are in place to collaborate with relevant agencies, including military and para-military forces, to coordinate emergency response efforts. NEMA is dedicated to ensuring the safety of lives and properties during potential flood events.

This impending flood situation rekindles memories of past flood incidents attributed to releases from the Lagdo Dam. Notably, a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Nigeria and Cameroon in 2016 aimed to ensure prior notification before dam releases. However, incidents in 2019 and 2022 saw unanticipated dam openings, resulting in severe flooding and significant losses of lives and property in various states across Nigeria.
