Sweden produced a scintillating performance to eliminate Japan and qualify for the semi-finals of the Women’s World Cup.
A goal in each half by Amanda Ilestedt and Filippa Angeldahl gave the Europeans a two goals advantage before Honoka Hayashi scored Japan’s consolatory goal in the 87th minute.
Japan were highly rated ahead of the match because of their exceptional performances in their four previous matches. But Sweden did their homework very well and succeeded in demystifying the Asians.
Sweden will take on Spain on Tuesday in one of the semi-final matches.
