FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: Super Falcons Prey on Australia

Super Falcons of Nigeria came from a goal down to defeat Australia 3-2 in Hamilton.

The co-host opened scoring through Emily van Egmond, who converted Caitlin Foord’s pass.

Nigeria equalized five minutes later through Uchenna Kanu, just before half time.

Twenty minutes into the second half, Osinachi Ohale’s header made it 2-1.

Seven minutes later, Asisat Oshoala  capitalised on a mix-up between Australia’s Alanna Kennedy and Mackenzie Arnold to score Nigeria’s third goal.

The co-host fought hard to score a second goal in injury time through Kennedy.

Australia’s fierce onslaught towards the end was too little too late as Nigeria took all three points.

Nigeria move top of Group B, level with Canada on four points, while Australia are a point behind both before the last matches of the group on Monday.

Australia must win Canada in Melbourne to guarantee a place in the knockout stages, while Nigeria will play Republic of Ireland, who are already eliminated, at the same time in Brisbane.
