FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: South Africa Beat Italy Qualify for Round of 16

The Bayana Bayana of South Africa are through to the last 16 after winning their first match at the Women’s World Cup after a hard-earned 3-2 victory over Italy.

Thembi Kgatlana took the bull by the horn and scored one of the most important goals of her career in the 93rd minute to give the Africans the victory.

Arianna Caruso opened the scoring in the 11th minute through a well-taken penalty. South Africa equalized in the 32nd minute when Orsi put the ball into her net.

Magaia put South Africa ahead in the second half only for Arianna Caruso to restore parity through an excellent header.

South Africa, who started the match third in the group with only one point leapfrogged Italy to the second place and qualify for the round of 16 where they face Group E winners Netherlands on Sunday.

Group G winners Sweden will face the defending champions USA in another round of 16 match the same day.
