FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: Debutants Shock Co-host

Debutants, Philippines scored their first goal and grabbed their first World Cup win as they defeated co-host New Zealand 1-0 in their second group match in Wellington.

Sarina Bolden scored the only goal in the 24th minute when she headed in Sara Eggesvik’s cross.

The home side backed by their vociferous fans pushed for an equalizer and thought they have gotten one when Jacqui Hand found the back of the net, but after VAR review, the goal was ruled out for offside.

They host missed couple of chances to equalised and will have to win their last group match against Switzerland to qualify for the next round.

This victory has thrown Group A open and handed former champions, Norway, who were beaten by a lone goal in their opening match by New Zealand, a life line.

Norway must beat Switzerland later today to keep their hopes of qualifying for the next stage alive. Conversely, Switzerland will become the first side to qualify for the round of 16.
