FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: Colombia Stun Germany As Co-host Crash Out

Germany suffered their first group stage defeat at the World Cup since 1995 as Colombia defeated them 2-1 in their second Group H encounter.

After a goalless first half, Linda Caicedo opened scoring for the South Americans in the 52nd minute, before the Europeans equalised in the 89th minute through Alexandra Popp’s penalty.

Deep into extra time, when it seemed that both sides will share the spoils, Leicy Santos’ cross found the head of Vanegas, who directed the ball into the net.

Colombia needs only a draw in their last group match with Morocco to top the group, while Germany must win South Korea to qualify. Both matches will be played simultaneously on Thursday.

Norway, who were last in the group anticipated that it might come down to goal difference so they did what was in their powers by thrashing the Philippines 6-0 and fortunately for them New Zealand could only settle for a goalless draw with Switzerland, who won the group with five points while Norway finished second with four points same as New Zealand, but the Europeans have a superior goal difference.
