Canada leapfrogged Australia to top Group B after they came from a goal down to defeat Republic of Ireland 2-1.
Ireland skipper, Katie McCabe scored the Debutants first World Cup goal just after four minutes.
The debutants held on to their lead until towards the end of the first half when Julia Grosso’s cross took a touch off defender Megan Connolly and hit the net.
Eight minutes into the second half Adriana Leon gave the Olympic champions the lead.
The Europeans could not find the equalizer. As the referee blast the final whistle, Ireland watch their World Cup knockout stage dreams wane.
They will play Nigeria in their last group match, which will be a mere formality.
Meanwhile, Nigeria will take on co-host Australia tomorrow in their second group match. A win for Australia will see them qualify for the knockout stage while a win for Nigeria will brighten the chances of the Super Falcons to reach the round of 16.
