Manchester United’s hopes of winning any trophy this season have been reduced to the UEFA Europa League, where they will battle Real Sociedad in the round of 16, as they were eliminated from the English FA Cup 4-3 on penalties by Fulham at the Old Trafford.
Super Eagles defender, Calvin Bassey headed Fulham in front just before the break, but United restored parity in the 71st minute through Bruno Fernandes.
The match remained a ding dong affair and dragged through full time and extra time into penalties.
Manchester United converted their first three penalties through Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot and Casemiro. Fulham also did the same through Raul Jimenez, Sander Berge and former Chelsea star, Willian.
While Victor Lindelof missed United’s fourth kick, captain Antonee Robinson converted for Fulham. With scores at 3-4, Joshua Zirkzee was condemned to score to keep United’s hopes alive but he missed, thereby handing Fulham a quarter-final ticket and handing the defending champions an exit ticket.
Other teams that reached the last eight are: Crystal Palace, Preston, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Manchester City and Brighton.
Nottingham Forest will take on Ipswich on Monday in the last round of 16 matches.
