Excessive Spices and Preserved Food Consumption Poses Health Risks, Says Medical Expert

A lecturer in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Rivers State University Dr. Ekechi Amadi is warning that excessive consumption of spices and preserved food particularly for individuals with diabetes and hypertension is dangerous.

Dr. Amadi in an interview with our reporter expressed concerns about the potentially harmful effect of the contents found in those products which could even be cancerous. She said the uses of spices generally are good only when the branded ones are used. She explained that some of the spices contain lots of salt and colorants which is not good, especially for those that have health issues like hypertension and diabetes.

Dr. Ekechi Amadi revealed that, recently, they are seeing more persons than usual coming to the hospital with different kinds of cancers. She said, what we eat combined with what we have in the environment might worsen the situation, thereby coming together and acting negatively on our health.

The Internal Medicine Physician Dr. Ekechi Amadi lamented that the lack of transparency regarding the actual ingredients of these products makes it difficult for consumers to ascertain what they are consuming. She further advised that to mitigate the risk, consumers should opt for branded products as they often undergo more rigorous quality control and provide greater transparency about the ingredients.
