Aston Villa had to play with 10 men for about half an hour after Ezri Konsa was sent off for pulling back Gordon as he ran clear.
Yet, the Magpies could not take all three points as they played without their last season hitman Alexander Isak, who is pushing to join Liverpool.
Despite their dominance, Newcastle United could only settle for a point.
