Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspurs bounced back from their defeats in the UEFA Champions League in the mid-week to win their matches in the English Premier League on Saturday.
The Citizens put their surprise 1-2 loss to visiting Lyon behind them to hammer Cardiff City 0-5. This is the 10th time Manchester City under Pep Goardiola scored more than five goals in a match.
Riyad Mahrez scored a brace in the second half, after Aguero, Bernardo Silva and Ikay Gundogan had put the visitors three goals up in the first half.
Tottenham returned from their disappointing 2-1 loss to Internazional in the mid-week to another away match in the English Premier League. Spurs visited Leon Balogun’s Brighton and Hove Albion and handed them their first home defeat in the EPL since March and ended their own three match losing streak.
Harry Kane scored his 143rd goal for Spurs in the first goal of their 1-2 victory, thereby equalling Jermain Defoe’s goal scoring record. Both are joint-fifth all time goal scorers for Spurs.
But, Manchester United could not sustain their winning performance at Switzerland, which saw them thrash Young Boys 0-3 as they were held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Wolves. It was the same score line between Fulham and Watford.
Burnley bashed Bournemouth 4-0 while Liverpool reclaimed top spot on the league table with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Southampton. Kelechi Iheanacho got a goal as Leicester City came from a goal down to beat Huddersfield 3-1.
On Sunday, Chelsea will visit West Ham United while Arsenal welcome Everton.
