Emetu tasks ABSU management to develop whistle blowing measures to tackle insecurity.
Abia State Deputy Governor, Engr Ikechukwu Emetu, has tasked the Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU) to develop and adopt whistle blowing security measure in tackling cases of insecurity and other Social malfeasances facing the school.
Welcoming Members of the Governing Board and other Top Management Staff of the University on a courtesy visit to his office in Umuahia, Engr Emetu, said the measure currently in operation in Federal University of Technology Owerri alerts the School Authorities of possible security breaches and other social vices perpetrated by both students and lecturers.
He said that the FUTO whistle blowing model had helped to track cultists who are identified and apprended even based on mere handshake while lecturers who are equally involved in sexual harassment and selling of handouts are equally severely punished.
The Deputy Governor advocated that parents be involved and made to sign the final clearance form of the students and indemnify their character and actions, stating that this would keep the students to be on his toes knowing fully aware that their parents would be alerted of any misdemeanours.
Engr Emetu advocated the return of Members of the Man O’ War in hostels and even off campus, stating that through the whistle blowing policy, it would be easy to identify cultists and hand them over for proper disciplinary measures and possible expulsion.
He challenged them to be intentional about maintaining security in ABSU and compliment the efforts of the non state security actors in the campus stating that if proper security architecture is put in place, it would be possible to remove the bad eggs in the Institution and achieve about 70 percent peace.
On some of their challenges, the Deputy Governor assured that the Governor, Dr Alex Otti, was committed to the total fencing of the Institute while the issues of deplorable state of the roads and request for mobility would receive adequate attention.
Earlier, the Pro Chancellor, Rt Hon. Agwu U. Agwu said that the Board was out to chart a new course of life in the Institution in view of recent happenings.
He commended the intervention of the Governor, which has seen meaningful work going on in the school stating that the issue of security needs to be permanently tackled as the issue is not peculiar to ABSU but a general malfeasances.
Also, in his own speech, the Acting Vice- Chancellor of the Institute, Professor Akubugwo, commended the Governor for tackling the Ihube/Isuikwuato security challenges which he noted robbed off negatively on the University as well as the renovation of and building of new hostels and faculties as well as employment waiver and preparation for accreditation of some Courses.
He appealed for assistance in the provision of CCTV cameras, rehabilitation of roads, and fencing the school.
Also Speaking, the Chief Security Officer of the School, Mr Chinonye Ugwa, collaborated the submission of the VC, particularly in areas of CCTV cameras and other modern security gadgets.
In his vote of thanks, the Registrar of the school, Dr Acho Elendu lauded the Governor for the great transformation going on in the school and promised that they would collectively actualize the Governor’s mandate.
