The luxurious Ikoyi residence of Dr. Desmond Chima Anyaso became a symbol of Igbo eminence on Saturday, January 25, 2025, as distinguished billionaires, technocrats, and politicians gathered to pay tribute to Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, of Abia State.
The gathering, reminiscent of a grand celebration of southeastern progress, brought together prominent figures such as the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party gubernatorial candidate for Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and the PDP gubernatorial candidate for Ebonyi State, Dr. Ifeanyi Odii.
Among the notable business magnates present were Allen Onyema (Air Peace), Prof. Obiora Okonkwo (United Nigeria Airlines), Obinna Iyiegbu (Obi Cubana), Pascal Okechukwu (Cubana Chief Priest), Ngozi Ekeoma (NEPAL Group), Ernest Azudialu Obiejesi (Obi Jackson, Nestoil), Oliver Alawuba (UBA), and Joseph Eze Okafor (Jowizazaa), among others.
In his introductory remarks, Dr. Anyaso attributed the remarkable attendance to Governor Otti’s exceptional leadership in Abia State. He characterized the event as a New Year’s visit, symbolizing the shared optimism and camaraderie among the attendees.
Several distinguished speakers, including Chief UD Kalu, Chike Okoroafor, Chief Charles Ahize, and Ngozi Ekeoma, praised Governor Otti for his transformative governance.
Chief UD Kalu remarked, “Previously, we hesitated to proclaim our origin from Abia State, but today, the narrative has changed. We take pride in your efforts, and now we are esteemed Abians.”
Similarly, Ngozi Ekeoma cited scriptures, stating, “We have gained insight because, in the past, we were blind, but now our vision is clear.” She urged the governor to maintain his momentum and focus on development.
During his speech, Governor Alex Otti expressed his gratitude to Dr. Anyaso and his wife for hosting the gathering and acknowledged the overwhelming support of the attendees.
Reflecting on his administration’s initiatives, he emphasized the importance of purposeful governance, stressing that leadership failures often originate from the top. “By doing well at the top, all other aspects align.
Our administration is dedicated to ensuring that Abia State’s resources serve its population. When leadership refrains from corruption, it becomes arduous for subordinates to engage in malpractice,” articulated Governor Otti.
In response to internal opposition, Otti compared dissenters to individuals whose “reliance on unethical practices has been severed,” suggesting their resistance stems from the disruption of corrupt behaviors. He reassured the audience that the vast majority of Abians—95%—support his administration’s progressive agenda.
Concluding the meeting, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, praised Governor Otti’s performance, noting that open opposition often signifies effective governance.
“While conversing with some people here, they expressed that their presence tonight is a testament to your commendable performance. Governor Otti is excelling, and it is imperative that we reinforce his efforts,” commented Obi. He urged Otti to prioritize the welfare of the underprivileged, recognizing that the well-off can fend for themselves.
