Don’t engage in acts capable of truncating Nation’s democracy: Journalists warned

The Nigeria Union of Journalist, Abia State Chapter has cautioned the political class to stop engaging in acts capable of truncating the Nation’s democracy.

In a Communiqué issued after their monthly Congress in umuahia , the council said that the event of the past few days are worrisome and therefore said that both the executive and the National Assembly members must trade with caution and operate within the ambit of the law in order not to truncate or derail the country’s hard earned democracy.

The Council implored political parties to strictly adhere to constitutional provision of the country in their conducts and utterance and not allow their selfless interest to override national interest.

They called on government at all various levels to intensify efforts towards complementing all projects embarked upon by them rather than abandoning or allowing them to stagnate. On the growing incidence of refuse dumps particularly in umuahia, the state capital, the council challenged the state Environmental Protection Agency ( ASEPA) to take proactive steps to free the state of filth especially the major cities as this falls within their core mandate.

 The Congress equally frowned at the prevalence of mentally retarded persons on the major streets of the state and urged government to take decisive steps to arrest the ugly situation as well as increase cases of youths indulgence in illicit and hard drugs and called for restrained due to adverse effects of these drugs on human and the youths .

They however appreciated the state government for setting up a committee on payment of salaries and other terminal benefits of pensions and urged the committee to fast track their action.

The council appealed to the state government to expedite action on the building of the Union Secretariat as Abia remains the only state in the country without an NUJ state Secretariat.

The Communiqué which were signed by the Comrade John Emejor and Victor Ndukwe , Chairman and Secretary of the council respectively charged journalists in the state to uphold professionalism in their reportage before,during and after 2019 General Elections.
