Delta govt debunks ethnic tension claims, reiterates Oborevwori

The Delta State Government has firmly denied recent allegations by Zik Gbemre who identified himself as the coordinator of the Niger Delta Peace Coalition (NDPC) accusing Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of inflaming ethnic divisions in Warri and politicizing sensitive community matters. In a detailed response, the government labeled the claims as baseless and misleading, affirming the Governor’s unwavering dedication to fostering peace and inclusiveness across the state.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads and Public Information), Charles Aniagwu, described the accusations as a “campaign of calumny” that misrepresents the Governor’s leadership record. He emphasized that Governor Oborevwori has remained deeply committed to harmony, equity, and unity since taking office.

“Since assuming office, Governor Oborevwori has prioritized the peaceful coexistence of all ethnic nationalities in Delta State, with particular attention to the unique diversity of Warri and its environs”, the statement read.

Aniagwu highlighted that the Governor has actively engaged traditional rulers, local leaders, and key stakeholders to promote lasting peace, especially in areas with a history of ethnic tension.

“He has consistently engaged traditional rulers, community leaders, and stakeholders to ensure the dark days of ethnic strife never return to our beloved state”, he added.

According to the government, at no point has Governor Oborevwori shown bias or encouraged behavior that could endanger inter-communal peace or suggest ethnic favoritism. Instead, he has served as a neutral facilitator of dialogue and reconciliation.

“It is inaccurate and unfair to suggest that the Governor ‘takes delight in making passive threats’ or that he is ‘playing politics’ with the situation. His Excellency has maintained open channels of communication with all traditional institutions in Delta State”, Aniagwu stressed.

The Commissioner further noted that Governor Oborevwori has consistently promoted moderation, dialogue, and mutual respect as tools for resolving communal disagreements. He referenced the Governor’s recent State of the State address as proof of his dedication to fairness and stability.

Aniagwu also revealed that security agencies have been instructed to investigate recent cases of vandalism and any other provocations reported in Warri, assuring that appropriate measures would be taken.

He reiterated that cultural events and festivals across the state will continue to be celebrated in line with legal frameworks and traditional norms, and any breaches regardless of the community will be dealt with responsibly.

He called on youth groups, civil society organizations, and community leaders to avoid incendiary remarks and instead support efforts to strengthen unity and development.

“Governor Oborevwori remains Governor for all Deltans—Itsekiri, Urhobo, Ijaw, Isoko, Anioma, and every other group. He will not be distracted by unfounded accusations or attempts to politicize communal issues”, Aniagwu stated.

He concluded by reaffirming the Governor’s focus on driving peace and inclusive development while creating an environment conducive to investment and job creation for the benefit of all citizens.
