The Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned his position with immediate effect, citing health-related concerns.
His resignation was conveyed in a letter addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and dated December 1, 2025. The development was confirmed last ,Monday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.
According to the presidential spokesperson, President Tinubu has accepted Abubakar’s resignation and expressed gratitude for his service to the nation.
“President Tinubu thanks the former minister for his dedication and contributions to national security,” Onanuga said.
Reliable sources within the Presidency disclosed that the President is expected to forward the name of Badaru’s successor to the Senate before the week runs out.
Abubakar, 63, previously served as the two-term Governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before his appointment as Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023.
His exit comes at a critical time, following President Tinubu’s recent declaration of a national security emergency, with further details on its implementation expected soon.
The State House also released an official statement confirming the resignation and reiterating the administration’s commitment to maintaining stability in the defence sector during the transition.
