The Catholic Women Organization of Umuahia Diocese (CWOUD),weekend, honoured over fifty women who have rendered tireless and unbiased service to God, as part of their activities to mark this year’s CWOUD day celebration.
The event which featured fund raising for indigent women, conferment of Nneoma titles, recognition of CWOUD pillars as well as past secretaries of various parishes had in attendance over 2000 women from the various denary that make up the Umuahia diocese.
In her address, the diocesan president of Umuahia, Lady Victoria Aliba, said the CWOUD day is an annual event that afford women of the diocese the opportunity of coming together to thank God for what He is doing in their midst and to celebrate themselves.
Lady Aliba disclosed that this year, the women as part of their celebration, decided to raise fund to support the indigents amongst them, especially widows, so they can cater for themselves and their children.
Recounting on the successes of the organization, the diocesan president noted that even though the CWOUD has recorded a great feat in farming as they now have a plantation, cassava and piggery farms, they also have challenges that have impeded their performances, as they find it difficult to meet up with the financial commitments at the diocesan and National levels.
She said they are also battling with the education of their women especially those in the rural areas who could not access education, advising the awardees to continue in the work of God which is from cradle to death and also see their awards as a call to more service to God and also encourage others to serve God, which is a ticket to heaven
In his remarks, the chairman on the occasion, Sir Nnaoha Njoku, praised the women for thinking out an empowerment programme for the indigent, stating that, that was what triggered his support for the 2019 CWOUD day.
According to him,it is first of its kind and urged the women not to relent in pursuing that which is good, adding that the less privileged in the society, particularly the youth, should not become deviants because of the situation they find themselves, but rather shun any vice or vices that can cause their lives and the society at large.
Contributing, the President of Catholic Men Organization (CMO), Sir Titus Ahaoma Agomoh, commended the CWOUD for the programme, revealing that the CMO would be doing a similar programme come November.
He advised the government to invest more in programmes that are people oriented than enriching themselves.
The Pastoral Council chairman of Umuahia diocese, prof Chris Chinaka was not let out in this, as he described the women’s empowerment programme as part of evangelism.
He thanked the leadership of CWOUD for putting up a programme to cater for the indigents.
Prof Chinaka, however, advised the government to do a rethink and support the education of the masses rather than amass wealth indiscriminately.
