Covid-19 : Rivers Lengthens Relaxation on Port Harcourt, Obio-Akpor LGs

Rivers State Governor, Chief Ezenwo Nyesom Wike has extended relaxation of the Covid-19 lockdown on Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt Local Government Areas till Sunday.

Wike, who announced this in a State broadcast on Wednesday, stated the total lockdown on the both LGAs were expected to take effect again from Thursday following two days. (Tuesday and Wednesday) set aside for residents to restock for food and medicals but will now resume on 17 May, 2020.

According to him, he said that he observed during routine monitoring how difficult it was for residents to withdraw money from their banks to make purchases within the Two;Day period that was given out; based on that, he Lengthened the days up to May 17, 2020.

“This difficulty has, no doubt, prevented most residents of the two affected Local Government Areas from preparing and making adequate provisions for the upkeep of their families when the lockdown returns.

“In consideration of concerns of our people, and need for residents to replenish their supplies especially, the State Security Council decided to impose night-time curfew and review the effective date of the complete lockdown on Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt City LGAs from the Thursday 14 May to Sunday 17 May 2020 by 8.00 p.m.

“Consequently, there will be night-time curfew from 8.00 p.m. to 6.00 a.m. Thursday 14, Friday 15 and Saturday 16 May 2020. Total lockdown on Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt LGAs will immediately follow from 8.00 p.m. Sunday 17th May 2020 until further notice.

“Furthermore, all residents are again advised to comply with all other established measures, including the compulsory wearing of face masks and the closure of our land, sea and air boundaries and entry routes, which are still in Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt Local Government Areas will resume from 8.00 p.m. Sunday 17th May 2020 until further notice.

Once again, thank you for your cooperation as we continue to do all we can to stop the spread of this virus in our State with your support by staying at home and staying safe”, he stated.
