COUNTDOWN TO 2024 WAFCON: Focus on Group B

Action will commence in Group B of the 2024 WAFCON taking place in Morocco on Sunday. Nigeria will take on Tunisia while Algeria will confront Botswana. Here is a preview of this interesting group.

NIGERIA

The Super Falcons of Nigeria are the most successful side of this competition with 11 titles. No wonder they are expected to overrun this group.

They are the only team that have qualified for every edition of the WAFCON.

They had a disappointing outing, by their standard, in the last edition finishing in fourth place.

To qualify for this WAFCON, they worked over Sao Tome and Principe in the first round before they crushed Cape Verde 7-1 in the second round.

Anything less than winning the title will be a disappointment for the Nigerian ladies.

TUNISIA

Tunisia are making their third WAFCON appearance with their best performance coming in the last edition where they reached the quarter-finals.

They qualified after scoring 18 goals in four matches. First, they hammered Niger Republic 12-1 on aggregate in the first round of qualifiers before eliminating Congo Brazzaville 6-3.

Reaching the quarter-finals will be a great achievement for the North Africans.

ALGERIA

The Algerian ladies are making their sixth WAFCON appearance and are returning since 2018.

They qualified after defeating Uganda 3-2 on aggregate and securing a 6-1 victory over Burundi.

They have never gone beyond the group stage.

BOTSWANA

Botswana debuted at the last edition and got to the quarter-finals. This time around with a measure of experience, they will be hoping to at least equal their first appearance performance.

They qualified after eliminating Gabon and Kenya, scoring 12 goals and conceding only two.

Sporting Ambassador Verdict: Super Falcons of Nigeria will win this group and either Tunisia or Botswana will join them to qualify automatically.
