COUNTDOWN TO 2024 WAFCON: Focus on Group A

The 15th edition of the CAF Women African Cup of Nation will kick off this Saturday. Sporting Ambassador brings you a preview of Group A.

This group comprises of the host Morocco, Zambia, Senegal and DR Congo.

MOROCCO

They are the host and the strongest team in this group. They were beaten in the final of the last edition by South Africa and will be hoping to clinch the trophy this time around.

Though they did not participate in the qualifiers, they have engaged in friendly matches that fine-tuned their team.

On June 4, the hammered Kenya 5-1 before defeating Cape Verde by a lone goal 11 days later. They have also defeated Malawi and Tanzania 4-2 and 4-0 respectively ahead of the WAFCON.

This will be their fourth WAFCON appearance and they will kick-off the competition against Zambia on Saturday at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

ZAMBIA

The Copper Queens are making their fifth WAFCON appearance. Their best performance was a third place finish they achieved in the last edition after defeating Nigeria by a lone goal in the third-place match.

Zambia qualified for this WAFCON after hammering Angola 12-0 on aggregate.

They will give the host the biggest challenge in this group.

SENEGAL

The Teranga Lionesses of Senegal are making their third appearance at the WAFCON. They qualified after defeating Mozambique and Egypt 3-2 and 4-0 on aggregate respectively.

Their best performance at the WAFCON came in the last edition when they got to the quarter-finals.

DR CONGO

The Democratic Republic of Congo ladies are making their fourth AFCON appearance and qualified for the first time in 13 years after defeating Benin Republic 4-2 on aggregate in the first round of qualifiers before securing a 3-2 aggregate win over former champions, Equatorial Guinea.

They will be hoping to reenact their 1998 performance which saw them finish third.
