Nigeria and Atalanta of Italy striker, Ademola Lookman has been named the 2024 African Footballer of the Year in a colourful ceremony held in Marrakesh, Morocco.
Lookman, who succeeds his Super Eagles’ teammate, Victor Osimhen, was outstanding for his club Atalanta scoring a hat-trick at the Europa League final to hand Bayer Leverkusen their only defeat of the season.. He was also instrumental to Nigeria’s second place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations.
His compatriot, Chiamaka Nnadozie, who wears her gloves for Paris FC won the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year as the Super Falcons of Nigeria won the Women’s National Team of the Year.
Michelle Alozie, Osinachi Ohale, Rasheedat Ajibade and Asisat Oshoala made the CAF Women’s First XI list.
The Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire won the Men’s National Team of the Year after winning the AFCON on home soil as South African goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams won the Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year as well as the Interclub Player of the Year. The Women’s Interclub player of the Year went to Sanaa Mssoudi.
Al Ahly of Egypt won the Men’s Club of the Year while the women’s category went to TP Mazembe of DR Congo.
Goal of the Year went to Mabululu of Angola while the Youth Player of the Year went to Lamine Camara. Doha El Madani won the Women’s Youth Player of the Year.
Women’s Player of the Year was won by Barbra Banda of the Copper Queens of Zambia.
Men’s coach of the Year went to Emerse Fae of the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire, while that of the Women’s category went to Lamia Boumehdi of Morocco.
