An Officer of the Nigerian Police Force, has been shot dead by a gang of armed robbers in a robbery incident that happened few hours ago in Umuahia,the Abia State capital.
The robbers who traced their victim from the Enugu- Porthacourt Expressway, to bank road in Umuahia, intercepted their victim who drove on an Ash colour highlander jeep.
According to an eye witness who would not want his name disclosed, said the robbers followed their target, a chinese man who went to the bank to withdraw some money.
The Source stated that the robbers took advantage of the traffic jam along the Mission Hill area, Umuahia,to intercept the vehicle of the Chinese man on his return from the bank, to rob him of the sum of #3 million.
He said the gunmen shot at the air to scare passers-by, before attacking the Highlander vehicle conveying the white man, shooting his police escort who died outrightly and the driver on the leg.
Our Source disclosed that the robbers sped off with the money, though left the chinese unhurt.
According to him, he doubts whether the driver would make it, because he lost alot of blood before he was taken to the Federal Medical Centre for treatment.
When our reporter called the Abia State command Police Public Relations Officer, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna over the phone, he confirmed the incident, saying it was unfortunate such act happened even at this time nolmacy is trying to be restored in the state,adding that investigations are ongoing to fish out those involved.
Our reporter further gathered that since the incident occurred between the hours of 10am and 11 am, operatives of the police force have been patrolling the streets of umuahia to rid the state of any criminal elements.
