The Nigerian Legion Abia State, has risen from the launching of the 2020 Armed Forces Remembrance Emblem Appeal, to beg the Abia state government to redeem the accumulated pledges made to the association over the years and not to bother making further pledge this year.
The Chairman Nigerian Legion, Abia state, Commander Ambrose Nnabugwu (Rtd),who made the passionate appeal in Umuahia, said the total levy owned them by the Abia government is to the tune of #38.5million and begged for it to be redeemed so they can use the money for the purpose it was meant for.
According to him, the monies raised from the Emblem Appeal is used to take care of the families of their fallen heroes and lamented that presently the families of the fallen heroes are not well taken care of.
Nnabugwu on a lighter note asked whether the state government was waiting for the levy to reach #38.5million before they would pay, pleading them not to make further pledge so that they can redeem the past ones made.
In his response, the governor of the State who was represented by his deputy, Sir Ude Oko Chukwu, felicitated with the Nigerian Legion for the role they are playing in the security of the nation, adding that indeed the fallen heroes needed to be celebrated for their input in the security of the nation.
The deputy governor urged the Legion to follow up the pledges made by the government, as it is not in the governor to make pledges without redeeming, saying perhaps the governor might have forgotten his pledges.
He further made another pledge of #2.5million, leaving the total levy to #41million.
