The President of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof. Victor Emmanuel Osodeke has commended Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU), Alumni Association for playing a pivotal role in the development of the University,

Prof. Osodeke who stated this at the institution during the 2nd Distinguished Alumni Lecture Series, to mark MOUAU 30th Anniversary/Founders’ Day recently, added that the negative turn of events bedeviling the Nigerian Universities calls for more concerted efforts from well-spirited bodies like MOUAU Alumni to rescue the University system from further collapse.


He also thanked the Global President, MOUAU Alumni Association, Dr Obasi, Igwe Oscar for initiating the 1000-seater capacity Lecture theatre project, adding that it will aid teaching and learning in the University.

The Professor of Soil Chemistry further decried the deplorable state of government-owned Nigerian Universities, advocating for an improved welfare package for Nigerian students, and a well-equipped University system to enhance teaching and learning among others.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe underscored the role of Alumni Associations in development of the University system, commending MOUAU Alumni Association for their commitment towards enhancement of the citadel of learning.


Prof. Iwe who noted that the problem of the nation is having negative effects on the Universities and its system, called on everyone to contribute to keep the University afloat.

He further revealed that the University has strategized to ensure that result processing, certificate issuance and transcript of students among others are delivered at good time, maintaining that his administration is on a mission to pursue, overtake and recover all.

In his keynote speech, the MOUAU Diaspora Alumni Coordinator, Prof Dennis Ikpe, disclosed that the institution has witnessed three decades of unwavering growth, transformation and paramount contributions to the academic horizon, insisting that the Alumni Association has played an indispensable role in continual refining of the University system.


Speaking virtually on the theme entitled: ‘The role of Alumni Associations in Development of the University system, Prof Ikpe identified four guiding pillars of the Audacity of Legacy in the development of the University to include; challenging established narratives, the boldness of creating a lasting impact, leveraging institutional strengths, as well as reinvention and responsibility.

Prof Ikpe who applauded the MOUAU Vice Chancellor, Prof Iwe for his enormous support to the MOUAU Alumni Association towards development and growth of the institution, urged every MOUAU alumnus in the country and in diaspora to join hands with the Association in building an enviable citadel of learning.

Contributing, the Regional Manager, Access Bank Nig PLC, Mr. Okechukwu Ehiemere expressed joy that MOUAU graduands are making waves across the globe, attributing it to the well-established educational system, sustained by the University management.

The seasoned Banker who called for synergy among MOUAU graduands, also advocated for voluntary mentoring services to the younger ones.

He thanked Dr. Obasi, Igwe Oscar-led Alumni Association for sustaining the gains made so far while calling for more sacrifices for the growth and development of the body.

Meanwhile, the National President, MOUAU Alumni Association and a member of MOUAU Governing Council, Dr. Obasi Igwe Oscar has applauded every member of the Alumni for their uncommon support in the building of the 1000-seater capacity lecture theatre by the group, expressing hope that it would soon be completed and handed over to the university.

He also appreciated the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Iwe for showing academic leadership in the institution as well as his fatherly role in actualizing the developmental vision of the Alumni Association.

He pledged that the Alumni would continue to partner with the University in developing its human and physical resources.

In his goodwill message, the Global Secretary, MOUAU Alumni Association, Dr Chukwudi Njoku, disclosed that the Association would continue to align itself with the physical development of the University and the coordination of all graduands of MOUAU within and outside Nigeria for more strategic intervention in the activities of the institution.

In his vote of thanks, the Umuahia Chapter Chairman, MOUAU Alumni Association, Comrade Onyekachi Anozie Uwalaka, thanked everyone that graced the event, adding that the group is on course in attracting the needed development to the University.

The week-long event witnessed honouring of some Alumni members with awards of excellence amongst others.
