ASUU hints on UNIPORT’s resumption date

Lecturers at the University of Port Harcourt are expected to resume when the school Senate announces official resumption date.

ASUU chairman in University of Port Harcourt Dr Austen Sado in an interview with our reporter said that the lecturers agreed on this after their Congress held a domesticate meeting to suspend the strike.

“We do not control resumption and closure of the universities, other than what the Senate of the universities does. National University Commission has instructed universities not to reopen until at least the 18th of January”

Chairman of  University of Port Harcourt chapter of ASUU further said that subject to the directives of the PTF and NCDC, until the Senate of the university announces resumption, students should not be expected to return to school. Adding that it is going to be premise on the advisory by the university.

Dr. Austen Sado urged students to prepare for intense academic activities. He however said the Federal Government knows the implications of not abiding by the agreement reached with the union.

” If government fails to implement according to the timeline, we will properly review this. There will be no need for any information or notification before the resumption of the strike” he stated.

Dr. Austen Sado further revealed that the Hon. Minister of Labour and Employment stated that the end allowance has been released to the National University Commission.

“What we are expecting is that government will keep fit with that agreement and also begin to pay the instalment salaries as they promised. It is unfortunate that at the end of December, that didn’t happen. The government knows the implications” Dr  Sado concluded.

You would recall that the National University Commission (NUC) directed the universities to reopen on January 18th in line with the recommendations of the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19.
