The Abia State Government and key stakeholders have eulogised the retiring Assistant Comptroller General (ACG) of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Echefula Anugwa, for his outstanding contributions to national service, describing his career as exemplary and impactful.
The commendation was made during a colourful pulling-out parade held at the NIS Headquarters in Umuahia. Governor Alex Otti said the event symbolised more than a ceremonial exit, but a celebration of legacy, dedication, and service.
The Governor, represented by his Deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, noted that Anugwa’s rise from humble beginnings in Obingwa Local Government Area to the pinnacle of his career reflects discipline, resilience, and commitment to duty.
He described the retired officer as a proud son of Abia whose imprint on the Nigeria Immigration Service and national development will remain enduring.
According to him, Anugwa’s years of service should be measured not just by duration, but by the depth of his contributions, which he said were both profound and inspiring.
The state government further applauded the retired ACG’s academic achievements and passion for continuous learning, noting that his progression from a National Certificate in Education to multiple advanced degrees—and ongoing doctoral studies—underscores a lifelong pursuit of excellence.
Dr. Otti also highlighted Anugwa’s innovative contributions to institutional reforms within the NIS, particularly his pioneering research on the computerisation of accounting systems, which enhanced salary administration, as well as his role in establishing the revenue e-payment system that improved transparency and efficiency in government operations.
In his remarks, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe commended Anugwa for his meritorious service, describing his retirement as a transition into another phase of life rather than a conclusion.
He noted that the retired officer distinguished himself as a worthy ambassador of the state and a public servant who upheld integrity and professionalism throughout his career.
Also speaking, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nanna Nandap, represented by ACG A.L. Kamidre, praised Anugwa’s 35 years of dedicated service, highlighting his discipline, diligence, and results-oriented approach.
She added that his ability to balance professional responsibilities with academic advancement set him apart and played a significant role in his attainment of the rank of Assistant Comptroller General.
Similarly, the Abia State Controller of NIS, Justina Oweh, described Anugwa as a seasoned administrator whose years in service were marked by development-driven leadership and commitment to institutional growth.
Delivering his farewell address, Anugwa traced his career journey, which began in March 1991 when he enlisted as a Senior Inspector after completing Basic Course 26.
He recalled serving in Cross River State, Enugu, and predominantly at the NIS Headquarters in Abuja, where he spent most of his service years contributing to the development of the Service.
The retired ACG charged officers and men of the Service to remain committed to continuous self-development, professionalism, and integrity.
He urged them to invest in personal growth, shun corruption, and maintain a humane approach in the discharge of their duties.
The event attracted top government officials, senior officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service, and well-wishers, all of whom gathered to honour a career widely regarded as distinguished and exemplary.
