Akwa Ibom: Oil Communities agitate for 10% Equity Shares

Oro Ethnic Nationality of Akwa Ibom State had frowned at an attempt to deny them of 10% equity shares meant for each of the oil communities in Niger Delta region.

One of the amnesty deals of the Federal Government was to allocate 10% shares to the oil mining communities in the Niger Delta

The Oro Nation which has five local government areas that produce oil said they have been denied their entitlements.

In a communique issued at the end of the General Meeting of Oron National Forum which was signed by the publicity secretary, Comrade Stephen Bassey, the forum condemned the non recognition of the five (5) Local Government Areas of Oro Ethnic Nationality as oil producing communities.

The forum maintained that the Oro ethnic nationality should be recognized as a core oil producing community having accounted for over 70% of crude oil produced by oil producing companies operating in their territorial waters and lands.

The communiqué reads in parts , “That the FORUM frowned seriously at the gross marginalization and injustices done to Oro people by Government at all levels and her collaborators and called for immediate redress.

“The FORUM condemn in strong terms the non-recognition of the five (5) Local Government Areas of Oro Ethnic Nationality as oil producing communities and therefore rejects in its entirety the calculated attempt to deny Oro Nation of 10% equity shares to the oil communities in Niger Delta region among other benefits.

“That Oro ethnic nationality be recognized as a core oil producing community having accounted for over 70% of crude oil produced by oil producing companies operating in our territorial waters and lands.”

The forum also urged the Federal and State Governments to expedite action for the realization of the proposed Ibaka Deep Seaport project for the overall benefit of the people.

They however pledged their readiness to to work with governments, corporate organizations, agencies and other progressive movements across the Country for the actualization of egalitarian Nigerian Federation.
