Akwa Ibom Govt donates essential work tools, palliatives to correctional service

Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom donates on Wednesday donated Computers and other electronic gadgets to the Non Custodial Unit of the Nigerian Correctional service in the State as part of measures to facilitate non custodial sentencing.

Emmanuel also gave food palliatives to the Nigerian Correctional Officers Wives Association (NICOWA) to cushion the effect of lockdown that was eased in the state, four days ago.

These were contained in press statement singed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, ASC1. Ogbajie Ogbajie and obtained by our correspondent in Uyo.

Ogbajie who listed the essential items donated to include; computers, cameras, printers, scanners and so on said those work tools would aid in the profiling of convicts and overall efficiency of the unit.

The Non Custodial Unit is one of the recent reforms introduced by the Controller General of Corrections, Ja’afaru Ahmed. This unit implements all non custodial sentencing in the Country which includes; community services, probation, parole, restorative justice and any other non custodial sentencing as enshrined in the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019.

While presenting the items to the unit in his office the state Controller of Corrections, Alex Oditah, said “this donation is timely during this pandemic as it will boost the output and morale of Officers in the Unit,” even as he appreciated the governor for supporting the unit.

The Officer-in-charge Non-Custodial unit, Imabong Nestor Udoh on receipt of the items, thanked the Controller for his immense support and promised to manage these resources/ items from the State Government judiciously.

Meanwhile, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Women Affairs, Dr. Glory Edet has given food palliatives on behalf of the State Government to NICOWA.

The food items were presented to the members through the Chairperson of NICOWA, Mrs.Ogor Oditah during their monthly meeting at Uyo Custodial Centre on Wednesday.

Mrs. Oditah on behalf of other women thanked the Governor and his wife, Dr. Martha Udom for her motherly support and care to women and the downtrodden in the State.
