Chieftains and supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Wednesday staged a peaceful protest in Abuja, accusing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of alleged bias in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The demonstrators marched toward INEC’s headquarters in the Federal Capital Territory, saying the protest was aimed at defending democratic principles and drawing attention to concerns about the neutrality of Nigeria’s electoral body.
Among the prominent political figures who led the protest was former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who reiterated the group’s position through his verified social media platforms.
“Myself and other leaders of the ADC are peacefully protesting against the partisanship of the electoral umpire. Our patriotic stance is aimed at safeguarding our democracy and preventing the enthronement of a dictatorship,” he said.
Other opposition figures present at the demonstration included former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi; former Senate President and factional ADC National Chairman David Mark; former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola; former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal; and Senator Dino Melaye.
Others in attendance were Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, the immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State, and activist Peter Randy-Akaah, alongside a large crowd of party supporters.
Protesters said the march was intended to draw national attention to what they described as growing concerns over the impartiality of electoral institutions and the potential implications for democratic governance in Nigeria.
As of press time, INEC had yet to issue an official response to the allegations. Further developments are expected.
