The Vice Chancellor of Abia State University Uturu, ABSU, Prof. Uche Ikonne has commended Nigerian government for the level of awareness it created in this year’s general elections.
Prof. Ikonne who gave the commendation while speaking with newsmen shortly after casting his vote at his country home, Aburuike Nsulu, in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia said the large turnout of electorate in today’s Presidential and National Assembly elections depicts how prepared and serious the Federal and State governments were in disseminating and sensitizing the electorate.
He also pointed out that the impressive turnout of voters means that the politicians and stakeholders in Isiala North equally performed their domestic functions by adequately mobilizing their people adding that such act is what is expected of them.
The academic, however, expressed worries over the late arrival of INEC officials and election materials at polling units as well as malfunctioning of the smart card reader machines and urged the electoral umpire, INEC, to correct the anomalies in the March 9, Governorship and State House of Assembly elections with a view to achieving free, fair and credible polls.
Meanwhile, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, candidate for Isiala Ngwa North State Constituency, Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, expressed disappointment over the malfunctioning of the card readers adding that they had to resort to manual voting to achieve success.
The immediate past Executive Chairman of Isiala Ngwa North Council, hence, described the card reader malfunctioning as a ploy to disenfranchise the electorate.
He further stressed that notwithstanding the technical hitch they experienced that his people were not deterred to perform their Civic responsibilities but urged INEC, to do the needful in the coming elections.
Onwusibe, therefore, assured that his party, the PDP, would emerge victorious at the end of the polls.
