A team of final-year optometry students from Abia State University, Uturu, has commenced a free eye health screening and treatment campaign at Enyiukwu Autonomous Community, Afaraukwu Ibeku, in the Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, as part of their boot camp.
The medical team, led by Miss Ugochi Theresa Ukaegbu, is offering free eye care services to the indigent members of the community, including cataract and glaucoma screening, refraction and prescription of glasses, diabetic and hypertension retinopathy screening, among others.
Miss Ugochi revealed that the aim of the free eye screening is to provide accessible and quality eye care services to the community.
According to her, “Our team of optometrists will conduct comprehensive eye examinations to provide, where necessary, prescriptions for glasses or contact lenses, identify early signs of cataracts (a clouding of the eye’s lens), and detect any damage to the retina caused by diabetes.”
However, Ugochi explained that in the case of glaucoma, early detection and timely intervention could significantly improve visual health and prevent vision loss.
She encouraged all community members, especially the elderly and those with underlying health conditions, to participate in this free screening service.
Earlier, the traditional ruler of Enyiukwu Autonomous Community, Eze P. K. Ukaegbu, expressed joy and commended the medical team for their kind gesture.
He advised his community to maximize the opportunity extended to them by the optometry students, led by their own daughter, Ugochi Ukaegbu, to care for their eye health.
Meanwhile, the President General of the community, Mr. Sunday Apugo, poured encomiums on Ugochi for bringing her team to the community.
