ABSU Convocation: Otti Commissions 5MVA Substation, Rehabilitated Hostels

…Flags Off 5,000-Capacity Female Hostel, Law Faculty

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has fulfilled his administration’s promise to restore stable electricity to Abia State University (ABSU) with the commissioning of a 5MVA power substation assuring that a larger independent power project is underway.

 

The power project is designed to distribute electricity across the University campus through multiple sub-transformers and ensure that once there is supply on the national grid, the entire University receives power.

 

The facility which also includes fault isolation provisions will be powered initially by gas turbines with plans to transition to renewable energy over time.

 

Speaking on Friday, at the ceremony which forms part of activities marking the combined 30th -34th convocation ceremony of the institution, the Governor described the development as “promise fulfilled”.

 

He further revealed that the State had already signed a contract for a more robust and independent power solution for the University and surrounding communities.

 

Governor Otti explained that the new power facility would not only serve ABSU but also extend electricity to Uturu, other adjoining communities and boost socio-economic activities in the area.

 

The Governor who also commissioned the three fully rehabilitated Hostels A, B and C, which were upgraded by his administration as part of ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and welfare for students in the institution, as well as flagged off the construction of a 5,000-capacity female hostel, and construction of the Faculties of Agriculture and Law within the University,

He commended the University authorities for complying with the State Government’s directive to upgrade facilities at the institution noting that the projects were already gaining momentum.

 

Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, let me start by thanking the University Authority of the Abia State University Uturu for seeing that the directive that the government gave is being carried out.

“I’m glad that the 5,000 capacity female hostel has already taken up. The construction is ongoing and today we are here to perform the foundation laying ceremony for the 5,000 capacity female hostel,” he said.

 

Governor Otti expressed happiness that the faculty of Law had already started making progress in terms of construction and reiterated that all campuses of the institution will be domiciled in the Uturu campus with the exception of the ABSU teaching Hospital in Aba.

 

The Governor while reiterating his administration’s commitment to deliver dividends of democracy to the people, stressed that governance must be centred on addressing the needs of the people.

Governor Otti stressed that the completed projects would improve living conditions for the students, enhance their learning environment and attract better academic excellence.

 

The Vice Chancellor , Prof Ndukwe Okeudo, in his remarks lauded the initiatives of the Otti led administration, and his desire to set to the development of the University.

 

He said that the timely interventions of the Otti led administration in the institution would among others significantly ease accommodation challenges and strengthen capacity at the Institution.
