ABIA STATE POLICE COMMAND DEEPENS TIES WITH JUDICIARY TO STRENGTHEN JUSTICE DELIVERY
As part of efforts to improve justice delivery and intensify the fight against crime, the Abia State Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, paid a courtesy visit today to the Chief Judge of Abia State, Hon. Justice Lilian Abai.
The visit, held in Umuahia, included senior police officers such as the Deputy Commissioner of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) and the Officer-in-Charge of Legal Services.
The delegation aimed to foster stronger collaboration between the police and judiciary—an alliance CP Isa described as vital for maintaining law and order.
In his remarks, CP Isa outlined several challenges facing law enforcement and the justice system. He pointed to violent crime, jurisdictional hurdles, and delays in processing overnight cases—issues that often result in extended detention of suspects. He called for swifter judicial processes to uphold suspects’ rights and ensure timely prosecution.
The Commissioner also raised concerns about juvenile offenders, calling for the establishment of Borstal homes in the state and more frequent juvenile court sittings, particularly for cases involving sexual offenses against minors.
He stressed the need for urgent reforms to protect vulnerable populations and deliver prompt justice.
Responding, Hon. Justice Lilian Abai welcomed the delegation and commended the Command’s commitment to justice and inter-agency cooperation. She reaffirmed the judiciary’s readiness to collaborate more closely with the police to address the concerns raised.
Justice Abai encouraged stronger coordination between Divisional Police Officers, Area Commanders, and magistrates, especially in line with the new Administration of Criminal Justice laws, which mandate access to police detention facilities. She also requested the posting of court duty officers to the High Court to enhance security and improve court operations.
The visit ended with both institutions reaffirming their commitment to enhanced collaboration—aimed at promoting security, safeguarding human rights, and ensuring efficient justice delivery across Abia State.
