The Abia State Government has announced plans to Introduce Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses in the state.
This is even as the state government has shifted the planned enforcement of the new operational hours for tricycles and motorcycles in Aba and Umuahia from July 1 to August 1, 2024.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu, announced the decision during a press briefing on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council Meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu stated that the extension was in response to the pleas and yearnings of the citizens which the state government got through various feedback channels.
He said that in preparation for the new enforcement date, the enumeration and registration of all commercial vehicles commenced on July 1, 2024 adding that the step is crucial for the full implementation of the policy in addition to giving citizens adequate time to prepare for the upcoming changes.

“To sustain the gains made by government with regards to extending business hours in the state particularly in Aba and Umuahia.
“As part of the initiatives and incentives to drive this new policy, the state government plans to introduce CNG – powered buses to complement whatever gaps that would be created by the full implementation of restriction policy.
“The arrangement will be such that keke and Okada operators will form cooperatives or clusters to access these buses, the bottom line is to ensure that commuters still move around especially this period of restriction” Prince Kanu explained.
The Commissioner who also provided updates on the ongoing certificate upload exercise among public and civil servants in the state, said a total 36,875 academic certificates and 25,458 career documents have been uploaded, with 7,582 documents sent to various institutions for verification.
Prince Kanu while noting that a good number of workers have uploaded their results, urged those who are yet comply, to do so in their own best interest.
The Commissioner noted that despite the rains, various road projects of the government have been ongoing unabated, adding that the designs for the expansion of Abia Tower-Onuimo road is in progress just as other road rehabilitation and reconstructions are going on.
Responding to questions by Journalists on the unsanitary conditions around Corperative axis in Umuahia, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma said that, “Government is intentional about clearing the mess there as well as relocate the people there and those that are at isigate.
“We are a government of due process.
“Government had concluded plans to relocate all those at Isigate but if we ask them to leave the place without alternative, we would have caused any lot of economic challenges for people there.
“A very strategic place has been identified and Government is about to acquire it. So, it is the same thing that we are going to do in Cooperative.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the State Director of Information, Mrs. Ugochi Ihediwa were present during the press briefing.
