Following the full mobilization and return to site by contractors handling various road projects across the State,the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Abia State Council, has commended Governor Okezie Ikpeazu over the directive.
The commendation was contained in a communique issued at the end of the NUJ maiden Monthly Congress for the year 2022, held in Umuahia and jointly signed by the state Chairman, Victor Ndukwe and Secretary, Adaeze Ralph Igbokwe.
Recall that Governor Ikpeazu had in a press statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Onyebuchi Ememanka,directed all contractors handling road projects in the state to return to site following their full mobilization by the state government.
The NUJ Abia State however appealed to the state government to ensure sustained funding of the ongoing projects which it has assured Abians would be completed before it quits office in 2023.
It called on contractors handling various projects in the state, to make the best use of the current dry season window so as to actualise government’s intention of completing all the projects it started.
While appreciating Governor Ikpeazu for identifying with Journalists during the Christmas and New Year celebrations as well for the relative peaceful atmosphere under which the festivities were held, the Abia NUJ council, urged governments at all levels, groups, individuals and other stakeholders to ensure the protection of lives and property as well as the sustainable of the prevailing peace in the state.
It appealed to the Abia state government to also mobilize the contractor handling the NUJ Permanent Secretariat to site to ensure completion of the project.
The Union expressed gratitude to the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Dr. Eze Chikamnayo, for identifying with the Council during her Beginning of the Year Annual Thanksgiving Service, 2022 edition; especially for his assurances that government would complete the ongoing construction of the NUJ permanent secretariat at Ogurube Layout before the expiration of the tenure of the Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu-led administration.
It stressed the need for members of the Union to uphold professionalism in the discharge of their duties at all times and especially during the stages and processes leading to the 2023 general elections and the elections proper and charged Journalists practicing in the state to always abide by the tenets of professional news gathering and reporting by ensuring truthfulness, objectivity and balance in their reportage.
