The Abia State House of Assembly, has called on the State and National Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, NEMA, and the National Boundary Commission to immediately come to the aid of the people of Isu clan in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State, who are currently rendered destitute and homeless consequent upon communal clash with Biasse community in Cross River State.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji who made the call during plenary session today, following a matter of urgent public importance presented by the member representing Arochukwu State Constituency, Hon Mike Ukoha, stated that it is the resolution of the House of Assembly demanding that the federal government agencies should act expeditiously given the degree of the crisis as many lives have been lost in the skirmish.
While calling on relevant security agencies to take action with a view to circumventing the situation and forestall future occurrence pending when the National Boundary Commission performs its statutory delineation, Orji through the resolution ordered the Abia State Commissioner of Police to reinstate the defunct police station in the affected area.
The speaker further mandated the adhoc committee earlier set up to handle related boundary crises to carry out thorough investigation and legislative oversight, adding that the committee has 3 weeks to report back to the House.
The constituted committee will be headed by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Uchendu, Hon. Kelechi Onuzuruike, Hon. Chukwudi Apugo, Hon. Ginger Onwusibe and Hon. Emeka Okoroafor.
Earlier, Hon. Mike Ukoha, had lamented that the clash between the people of Isu clan and their neighboring community, Biasse in Cross River State, has claimed 40 lives and rendered the people homeless.
Ukoha, therefore, passionately appealed to the Abia State House of Assembly to take necessary legislative action and further called on concerned agencies, NEMA and SEMA, to come to the aid of his constituents.
Highlight of the plenary was observation of a minute’s silence by the legislators on the 40 persons who lost their lives in the crisis.
