Abia state government says it has initiated discussions with the Federal Ministry of Tourism with the aim to regain control and refurbish tourism sites in the state currently managed by the federal government.
Senior Special Assistant to Governor Alex Otti on Tourism and Entertainment, Mr. Justice Martins stated this, Tuesday at Government House Umuahia,while briefing Journalists ahead of the World Tourism Day celebration.
The Governor’s aide while noting that Abia State boasts of 17 tourist sites within its borders,stated that the intention to
refurbish tourism sites in the state is to revitalize and maximize their potentials inorder to boost revenue, create jobs, and attract investors to the state.
He revealed that the current administration is developing a blueprint for action to address key challenges in the tourism sector inline with it’s goals to drive a more robust and inclusive economy.
Speaking on the theme for this year’s World Tourism Day tagged, “Tourism and Green Investments”, Martins stressed the need for embracing sustainable practices to safeguard the planet for future generations.
The Tourism Boss who highlighted efforts by the present administration to foster the growth of tourism and enhance the hospitality industry within the state, revealed that plans are underway to establish leisure parks in three major cities of the state including, Aba, Umuahia and Ohafia.
He said; “Under the leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, Abia is positioned to drive a regional and national tourism growth and is poised to strive to position Abia as a safe destination of choice for quality entertainment, leisure and tourism.
“This little drops can already be seen in the lightning up of major Abia Cities within the past few weeks and remedial works on connecting roads within the cities, these efforts are to foster sense of security and a round the clock economic drive for the state”.
The Governor’s aide identified challenges of the tourism sector of Abia State, to include; the dilapidated tourist sites, existing capacity gaps and challenges of hospitality institutions within the state.
He outlined key strategies, such as empowering local communities, promoting education and awareness among tourists, encouraging innovation and partnerships with local and international stakeholders to promote tourism.
Martins, pointed out that the state government’s vision for the sector is to promote standards in the hospitality industry, instill confidence in the local populace and urged Abians to join the current administration in making the state a model for all to envy.
He emphasized the significance of tourism, its impact on the local economy, and the need for sustainable practices adding that the World Tourism Day celebration serves as a reminder of the immense impact that tourism has on the world especially in terms of global connections and local economy in addition to it’s critical role of shaping the future.
“The impact of tourism extends far beyond cultural exchanges. It is a formidable driver of economic growth, providing livelihoods to millions of people around the globe. Small and large businesses, from local artisans to international hotel chains, rely on the tourism industry for their sustenance. As we emerge from the challenges posed by the global pandemic and insecurity, tourism can be a crucial catalyst for economic recovery and resilience”,Martins stated.
World Tourism Day, celebrated annually on September 27th, provides an opportunity to showcase the significance of tourism in the local economy and celebrate the diverse cultures and attractions that the region has to offer.
