Abia State Government has issued a stern warning to school proprietors who violated the directive for the 2024/2025 academic year resumption date, saying that they may face sanctions.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, made the announcement while briefing Journalists on the outcome of the recent Executive Council Meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
Recall that some schools reopened yesterday, September 16, against the official government-mandated resumption date of September 23.
The move, according to the Commissioner undermines the present administration’s ongoing efforts to establish a strong regulatory framework in the education sector.
“Some schools went ahead and resumed yesterday against the directive that was given by the Ministry of Education.
“Those principals who stepped out of line to reopen schools yesterday may be sanctioned”, Prince Kanu warned.
The Commissioner noted that the Ministry of Education would launch an investigation to identify the schools involved and understand the reasons behind their actions.
The Commissioner further emphasized the need for stricter regulations in the education sector, stating that the Ministry of Education is tasked with supervising and regulating schools across the state to ensure a well coordinator education system.
“Government is reforming the Education sector, and every other sector for that matter. Government thinks that it is necessary to ensure that a very strong regulatory environment is put in place to regulate the different sectors“, he stated.
Prince Kanu equally informed that the Committee on the recovery of School lands has observed anomalies involving private individuals, religious organizations, communities, and market associations adding that the Committee would not relent in it’s task of addressing the issue.
The Commissioner expressed concern over the ongoing destruction of public property by some individuals and businesses, announced that Government will no longer tolerate the malicious destruction of Properties put in place for Public use.
He disclosed that the Managing Director of a Gas Company along the newly constructed 6 Lane Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard has been arrested for destroying a concrete pavement and damaging a manhole on the pedestrian walkway.
He used the opportunity to call on communities, traditional rulers and youths to take ownership of all government properties within their communities.
“This is just an instance of the malicious damage of government property across the state by unscrupulous individuals.
“Government cannot be spending billions of Naira to ensure that necessary infrastructure are put in place for their comfort and convenience and unscrupulous individuals will be busy destroying these properties”, the commissioner stated.
Prince Kanu who highlighted the government’s vision for the state, said efforts are underway to modernize infrastructures and transform Umuahia and Aba into smart cities.
He also announced that Governor Alex Otti would be hosting a delegation of the South East Council of Traditional Rulers on September 24 and attributed the influx of investors, opinion leaders, and other groups, to the leadership qualities of Governor Otti who he said has continued making Abia the envy of all.
Responding to questions from journalists, the General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Agency, Mr. Kingsley Agomoh, disclosed that more than 15 Manholes have been destroyed along the newly commissioned six-lane Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard.
He warned that the government would not continue to stand by and watch while public facilities are damaged.
