Abia State Government says it has set a target of ₦120 billion in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for the 2025 fiscal year.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, who disclosed this while briefing Newsmen on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting, presided over by Governor Alex Otti, noted that the new target represents a 207% increase over the previous IGR projection.
Prince Kanu emphasized that the present administration has been proactive in revenue generation and has made significant strides in boosting the State’s revenue base.
He revealed that the State Government surpassed its 2024 Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) target of 32 billion naira by generating 39 billion Naira and expressed optimism that the State would achieve greater financial success in 2025.
“Since the inception of this administration, the State Government has done very well in its pursuit of IGR.
“The State Government may not be where it wants to be but in terms of figures, the state government has done very well.
“It has to be put on record that in the past year, the State surpassed it set target in that regard.
“In the 2025 budget the State Government has planned to scale up its IGR base by N120billion which amounts to about 207per cent increase over the IGR target of the previous year”, Prince Kanu stated.
The Commissioner emphasized that Revenue generation is a key responsibility of any serious Government, pointing out that it provides the financial backbone for sustainable development and infrastructure projects.
“Every responsible Government at all levels, whether at the Federal or sub-national level, takes the issue of Internally Generated Revenue serious because IGR enables a Government to support and sustain its developmental programmes.
“Abia State Government is no different”, the Commissioner said.
Prince Kanu also announced that the State Government is organizing a retreat for all its appointees to realign with its vision and objectives.
The Commissioner explained that the retreat, which follows a similar exercise held six months ago, will serve as a platform for reviewing performance and setting new benchmarks for effective governance.
He noted that the State Government is embarking on a number of reforms to ensure that Abians are better served through more developmental programmes and initiatives.
