A total of 9,200 residents from the 184 wards in Abia state are set to benefit from the first phase of Interest-Free Revolving Loans under the Abia State Cooperative Support Scheme, which would be officially launched on Thursday, July 11, 2024 by Governor Alex Otti.
The initiative aims to support Minor and Micro-business operators across the state.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu disclosed this while briefing Newsmen on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council Meeting chaired by the Governor.
Prince Kanu stated that the scheme is an interventionist program that serves as both a palliative measure and an empowerment tool for beneficiaries,.
The Commissioner noted that the programme is designed to assist business owners in their businesses and ensure an even distribution of benefits throughout the state.
He said that Fifty beneficiaries have been selected from each of the 184 wards in Abia State to participate in the program, adding that the selection process would be done at the ward level.
“The short, medium and long term effects impacts on the program are huge.
“It will definitely have a salutary effect on the Abia state economy and would help to ameliorate the difficulties people are experiencing in their businesses as a result of the economic headwinds that are apparently affecting the national economy.
“In all, about 9200 persons will benefit from this scheme in the first phase. It would come in phases”, the Commissioner further disclosed.
On workers salaries, Prince Kanu emphasized that the current administration is committed to paying workers’ salaries promptly, despite occasional technical issues arising from the use of technology.
“Government is poised to always ensure that salaries are paid as at when due and any issues arising there from will always be tackled“, Kanu assured.
Price Kanu, who emphasized that the Finance Commissioner and the Accountant General’s office are working diligently to resolve issues of workers salaries as they occur, pointed out that most of the issues stem from the civil servants and pensioners’ side, due to banking complications or incomplete verification exercises.
While pointing out that efforts are underway to revitalize the Education Sector, the Commissioner noted with dismay, the rise in vandalisation of public schools and property in the state and warned that trend must be stopped to ensure government’s efforts in the sector are not in vain.
Prince Kanu, urged Presidents General, Town Union Executives.and others Stakeholders to take ownership of the public schools in their communities, and ensure that these ugly trend is checked and brought to an absolute end.
He announced that henceforth enforcement against street trading and illegal motor park operations in Aba and Umuahia would commence and advised those engaging in such acts to desist forthwith
“Finally for the upteenth time, the state government is advising residents of Aba and Umuahia as well to refrain from street trading and proliferation of unauthorized motor parks.
“We believe that the state government in it’s desire to enforce state policies with human face, have advised Aba residents enough about the ugly trend of street trading. Consequently, the enforcement of the no street trading policy has kicked off in ernest and defaulters will have themselves to blame.
“As I speak the enforcement has started and defaulters will have themselves to blame”, Prince Kanu stated.
Contributing, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu, decried the unwholesome activities of motorist within Osisioma junction and parts of Umuahia the capital city,
Prince Nwachukwu who is also the Abia state Taskforce Chairman, said the state government had outlawed loading and unloading activities in unauthorized places in Umuahia and Aba in a bid to make the environment conducive for investors.
He warned that government would no longer allow the activities of few individuals discredit its efforts in making the state a safe haven for investors and therefore would act accordingly in the interest of the state.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Mike Akpara, addressed recent rumors alleging that he receives 10 million Naira monthly and clarified that neither he nor any other Abia state government officials receive such amounts, adding that such rumors are baseless and unfounded.
