The Abia State Government is set to distribute 53 transformers of different specifications to 53 communities across the state as part of efforts to enhance electricity infrastructure.
The Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday, disclosed this while addressing newsmen at his office after taking delivery of the 53 newly procured transformers.
According to the Commissioner, “This is part of the sets of transformers that will be delivered in the state to fulfill Governor Otti’s mandate of providing access to reliable electricity for Ndi Abia.
“The first batch we just received will be distributed to 53 communities within the state to support them in boosting electricity supply. These efforts are geared toward improving electricity infrastructure in Abia State. As you know, we collaborate with stakeholders in the sector to enhance infrastructure development.”
The Commissioner further explained that the distribution exercise would be conducted in phases to ensure a sustained impact and to provide opportunities for more communities to benefit over time.
Through phased distribution, the Commissioner noted, Abia’s electricity assets would see significant improvements. The criteria for selecting beneficiary communities include high population density, commercial hubs, high-security risks, and a “first come, first serve” basis.
“We have received several applications from various communities, and the beneficiaries have been identified. We will invite them to collect their transformers soon,” he said.
Engr. Monday urged the benefitting communities to take ownership of the transformers and ensure their maintenance. He reassured communities not included in the first phase that they would be prioritized in subsequent distributions.
